We believe that by sharing MUSICAL instruments children who would not otherwise have the opportunity can experience freedom. This type of freedom and self-discovery is often stifled in an atmosphere of economic hardship.
The Holly Area Youth Assistance Musical Instrument Program lends musical instruments to economically challenged students. These students live in the Holly Area School District (HAS). This program allows them to join the school band. Holly Area Youth Assistance (HAYA) accepts donations of gently used instruments. They have the instruments refurbished and cleaned before lending them to children. Since HAYA is a nonprofit organization, donors get thank-you letters. These letters thank them for the instruments and can be used for their tax deduction records.
Working closely with the band teachers, students who gain from this program are identified. The family signs a contract with HAYA. They agree to care for the instrument for a year. They will return it when the youth no longer participates in any of the HAS band programs. The Musical Instrument Program Committee will contact the parents near the end of each academic year. They will review the condition of the instrument. They will renew lending agreements for students who plan to continue in HAS band programs.
HAYA aims to help by connecting resources and instruments to families. This reduces the financial barriers between students and their pursuit of developing musical talents. In turn, students experience an increase in skills, interests, and self-esteem. This occurs while they join in adult-supervised free time activities, like band. These improvements promote young people’s positive development.
