Why Attendance Matters: Understanding Chronic Absenteeism

Nationwide, as many as one out of 10 students are chronically absent. This means they miss 10 percent or more of school days. That’s nearly a month. Chronic absence is a leading early warning indicator of academic trouble and later dropout.

Attendance is essential to school success. Too often, students, parents, and schools do not realize how quickly absences can add up to academic trouble. Absences, both excused and unexcused, can quickly become problematic. Chronic absence is missing 10 percent of the school year, or just 2-3 days every month.

This can lead to third-graders being unable to master reading. It can cause sixth-graders to fail courses. It even results in ninth-graders dropping out of high school. Low-income students, who most depend on school for opportunities to learn, are especially harmed when they miss too much instruction.

Get your child to school on time every day.

This is crucial unless they are sick.

It ensures your child has a chance to succeed in school.

While others can help, you are the bottom line.
